Numerology history: selected sources and their limits

Four landmarks in number philosophy, Lo Shu and modern books, with identified passages and limits on claims about ancient origins.

Numerology has no single, simple and uninterrupted origin story. Ancient number philosophy, mathematical squares and modern name calculations answer different questions. A shared interest in numbers does not establish the transmission of one method.

Number philosophy and name calculations

In Pythagorean philosophy, numbers appear as principles for understanding the world and musical harmony. The surviving ancient account describes and evaluates those ideas; it does not provide a manual for calculating a profile from a Latin-alphabet name and birth date.

The useful distinction is that an idea about numbers is not yet a letter table. Attaching a philosopher's name to a method does not establish that he devised it. The bibliography identifies the ancient account and scholarship on later attributions.

This is a property of the 1–9 arrangement. It is not a personal chart and does not measure traits.

This arrangement belongs to a distinct Chinese context. Checking its sum does not establish a birth-date interpretation. Nor does the Chinese tradition automatically become a stage between ancient Greece and Western numerology: that connection would require separate evidence.

Four landmarks without an invented chain

Open a landmark to distinguish what it documents from what remains to be established.

The ancient Greek account

It documents philosophical explanations about numbers and harmony. It does not identify the creator of the modern A–Z table. An account of other people's ideas must be distinguished from a manual written by the person to whom they are attributed.

Lo Shu and the modern 2015 study

The square has a verifiable mathematical structure. The year 2015 dates the study used here, not the square's origin. A modern birth-date application is distinct from a property of the original arrangement.

1908: a modern publication on numbers

The documented example groups 8, 9, 11 and 22 in a symbolic category. This differs from the 11, 22 and 33 retained in Numerus's reductions. Shared numbers do not establish identical rules. Ancient attributions in that publication remain the modern author's claims, not independent confirmation.

1964: the date of an edition

The catalogue identifies an Arc Books edition. It does not establish the first edition's date or verify the text's historical or predictive claims. The date of a copy or edition must be distinguished from the origin of the method it describes.

How to check an origin claim

Start with the exact claim: is it about a symbol, alphabet, reduction rule or complete personal interpretation? Then look for evidence that could support that particular statement.

A dated edition shows that the text was published then. An identifiable passage shows what the text claims. Establishing transmission between periods also requires evidence connecting the documents.
