Personal year calculation and reflection guide

Calculate any selected Personal Year with Numerus's 1–9 rule, follow an engine-generated nine-year ring and use each theme as an optional reflection prompt.

A Personal Year is a number calculated from your birth month, birth day and a selected calendar year. In Numerus, it is always between 1 and 9. It gives you a symbolic theme to consider for that year, not a forecast of what the year will bring.

You can calculate a past, present or future year using the same steps.

Calculate it by hand

Use the month and day of birth and the calendar year you want to examine.

  1. Reduce the birth month to one digit by adding its digits if needed.
  2. Reduce the birth day in the same way, continuing until one digit remains.
  3. Reduce the selected calendar year to one digit.
  4. Add those three results.
  5. Reduce that total to one digit.

At every step, continue through 11, 22 or 33 if one occurs. They are not stopping points in this formula. That is the annual rule used by Numerus, even when a profile calculation would keep a master number.

The two year fields have different jobs. The year inside your birth date helps Numerus validate that date; the selected calendar year is the year actually added. Keep your real birth date in the first field when comparing years. Your name is not used.

The example below uses a fictional birth date. The selected year's trace and the values in the chart are generated by the same engine as the calculator.

Try a different date or start from another year. The initial example uses July 16, 1990.

2026: Personal Year 6

Responsibility

Personal Year 6 brings responsibility and close relationships into focus. Its theme concerns care expressed through concrete commitments and how those commitments are shared. Helping includes understanding what is needed and what you have agreed to do.

An example: You have offered to water a friend's plants. You agree which need water and how long your friend will be away, so the help fits the actual need.

Keep the month and day fixed, then advance the selected calendar year. The values move through the sequence 1–9 and begin again. This repetition follows from the digit-reduction rule. It is not evidence that your experiences repeat every nine years.

Read two neighboring calendar labels in the example before looking at their themes. The birthday stays fixed, while the year changes. For your own comparison, change the first chart year and press “Update chart”, keeping the birth date unchanged. That isolates the input responsible for the annual change.

Two people with the same birth month and day receive the same Personal Year for the same selected year. The birth year does not enter this formula.

When does a Personal Year start?

Numerus uses the selected calendar year, January through December. It does not wait for your birthday to change the result, or calculate an overlap between two annual “influences.”

When comparing calculations, check the period and reduction rule. A birthday-to-birthday result covers a different interval from a calendar-year result. A method that keeps 11/2 or 22/4 also uses different stopping points from Numerus’s annual 1–9 rule. The master-number guide explains what reduction changes.

Role in a symbolic readingA theme for the selected yearA profile position based on the full birth date

To check the distinction, compare two selected years while keeping the full birth date unchanged. The annual trace uses the selected year; the Life Path trace keeps the year of birth. You can even select the birth year for the annual calculation. Matching inputs still do not erase the positions' different roles or reduction rules. A shared result does not transfer meaning from one position to the other. The method guide shows both formulas.

What do numbers 1 to 9 mean?

Choose a number to read what its theme means, then try the question if it is useful. The explanations concern Personal Year symbolism; the questions are Numerus suggestions.

Initiative

Personal Year 1 emphasizes initiative: choosing a direction and taking a first step. In this reading, a beginning means starting something you want to try without waiting for every detail to be ready.

An example: If you want to learn to draw, one page of sketches makes the idea tangible. You do not need to buy every material first.

A question to explore

What would count as a first attempt at a small project I have already chosen?

How do 2 and 6 differ? Both themes can concern relationships, but their focus differs. At 2, the focus is cooperation: reaching an agreement and responding to each other’s contributions. At 6, it is responsibility: the concrete care you have agreed to offer and how you sustain that commitment. Choosing a date for a gathering together illustrates the first theme; preparing what guests need illustrates the second.

The works consulted for the annual themes are listed at the end.

Keep the reflection close to experience

Record the year, the theme and a concrete situation it brings to mind. Return later with an observation: what you tried, how it went and what you learned from the experience. Your notes let you follow your own choices over time.
