Modern Western numerology method
Follow Numerus's modern Western calculation rules: letter values, accents, Y, master numbers and each profile formula.

Numerus uses a variant of modern Western numerology. The rules presented here show how we turn a birth date and a name into numerology values. This guide gives you those rules, including the choices that can make another calculator return a different answer. You can check the arithmetic without accepting any interpretation attached to it.
Prepare the name before adding
The engine calculates the name you enter. It cannot tell whether that is a birth name, current name or shortened form. When comparing results, keep the spelling and the included names the same.
Numerus first applies Unicode NFKD normalization, removes combining marks and converts letters to uppercase. It then calculates only the resulting A–Z letters. For Romanian names, this produces the following changes:

Spaces, apostrophes and hyphens separate the displayed name but add nothing to its total. Digits and other punctuation also contribute nothing. There is no separate reduction for each word of a compound name.
Normalization is not a universal transliteration service. Some letters, including some Latin-script letters, do not become A–Z. When an unsupported letter remains, the engine skips it and issues a warning. Check the recognized name before interpreting a partial result. If no calculable letters remain, name-based results are unavailable; the date-based values can still be calculated.
The alphabet used in the calculations
Each accepted letter takes a value from the repeating sequence 1–9. The table below is generated from the same letter-value function as the calculator.

This A–Z mapping is the convention used in these calculations. Diacritics and formulas follow the Numerus rules described below. The reading list appears at the end. The section on differences between calculators explains which choices can change a result.
What reduction means here
To reduce a total, add its decimal digits and repeat as needed. For profile values, stop when you reach a single digit or 11, 22 or 33. Those three are called master numbers within this convention. They are stopping points in an algorithm, not measures of a person's importance.
Preserving a master number means keeping it when a total reaches it. The engine does not search inside a longer number for the digits 11, 22 or 33.
Calculate each position
A position tells you which input produced the number. Two matching numbers can come from different parts of the calculation.

If the name has no accepted vowels, Soul Urge is unavailable. If it has no accepted consonants, Personality is unavailable. Neither case is interpreted as a zero or a missing personal quality. Without an Expression value, there is no Maturity calculation.
For Personal Year, use the birth month, birth day and the calendar year selected in the calculator. Reduce each separately, add the results and reduce again. Every reduction in this annual calculation ends at 1–9, including totals that would be master numbers in a profile. The birth year is not part of this formula.

The example below is fictional. Its values and steps come from the calculation engine, so the same rules govern the demonstration and your result.

To repeat it by hand, start with the recognized letters. Make three totals: all letters, vowels only and consonants only. Apply the stopping rule to each, then follow the date steps and the Maturity addition.
Why another calculator may disagree
Check three things first: the exact input, when reduction happens and how Y is classified. A shared label such as “Western” does not settle those choices.
For a name, compare the order of operations: add all letters before reducing, or reduce each name part before adding? Numerus uses the first approach. The fictional Adrian Doru example in the master-number guide shows both paths. Check Y as well: here it is always a consonant.
For a date, check whether the month, day and year are reduced separately and where master numbers are kept. Numerus applies the segmented formula in the table, without a supplementary calculation that replaces its result. Compare the outputs only after checking these steps.
The historical label “Pythagorean” needs similar care. Scholarship on Pythagoreanism distinguishes early number philosophy from later attributions. It does not establish that Pythagoras devised the modern A–Z table. We identify our implementation by its version so you can inspect what it actually does.
A reproducible result establishes that a rule was followed. It does not validate a personality reading or forecast. The evidence and limits guide explains that distinction. When you want to try the method, the profile calculator shows the calculation alongside the result.
